Music Recording. HELP!

ok Im trying to record a simple mixtape for fun. I have the audacity installed but I cant get it to save or convert to mp3 format. Im looking for a new way to record myself and burn to a cd. I dont really have money to invest so anything free and legal would be great. If thats not possible than where can can i purchase the software.
